Visualising Late Antiquity

Those of us practicing iconography and various church arts often work with ancient techniques, pigments, tools and materials which express the liturgical meaning of the subject.  We strive for the union of the medium with the message, to put it in current parlance and simplify.

Here is a new website where artist Will Foster has been working with scholars, archeologists and grad students from the University of Kent in the UK to portray life in Late Antiquity, the era from which Christianity emerged.  This is a three year project and here is the beginning of their efforts.

As we labor in our studios, perhaps this gallery of images might spark some idea about process or materials which will spur us on to a deeper realization of our goals?
