Detail of the Epitaphios of Thessaloniki Depicting Angels Grieving Over the Dead Christ
14th century — The Epitaphios of Thessaloniki is one of the greatest pieces of Byzantine textile art. It was found in a church in Thessaloniki in 1900 and has since provided the benchmark against which all Byzantine needlework is judged. This detail illustrates the sensitivity of the embroiderers in their craft. | Located in: Byzantine Museum. — Image by © Werner Forman/Corbis
